SUMMARY:The Acid Cole Trio
DESCRIPTION:Before he became a pioneering international pop singing sensation\, Nat “King” Cole earned acclaim as a first-rate jazz pianist whose trio set a heady standard for its impeccable taste\, urbane instrumental interplay and joyous sense of swing. Indeed\, the group started off as King Cole & His Swingsters before changing its name to the Nat “King” Cole Trio. \nThe original lineup teamed Cole with the superb guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Wesley Prince. Its drummer-free lineup repeatedly soared in the late 1930 and early 1940s\, although it was thanks to “Straighten Up and Fly Right\,” “Route 66” and other classics that featured Cole’s luminous vocals that led to major stardom. \nNat Cole’s legacy as an instrumentalist and band leader is saluted by Los Angeles’ Acid Cole Trio. The group teams Grammy-winning pianist and arranger Bill Cunliffe with Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau bassist Darek Oles and guitarist Larry Koonse (Grammy nominations with Bob Mintzer (All L.A. Band) and Peter Erskine (Dr. Um)). Oles and Koonse are also co-leaders of the long-established Los Angeles Jazz Quartet. They have played together in various groups for thirty years\, and have a unique synchronicity harmonically\, rhythmically and melodically. They will perform original Nat Cole arrangements\, originals\, and newly discovered charts from the early Ahmad Jamal piano/guitar/bass trio. \nParking: there is free street parking around PPC all day Saturdays. See our map page for other parking options. \nArtists: \n\nThe Acid Cole Trio\nBill Cunliffe\, piano\nLarry Koonse\, guitar\nDarek Oles\, bass

SUMMARY:Captivating Strings
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a beautiful summer evening of music from Melodia Mariposa. We are honored to present a truly extraordinary ensemble for this performance. We are being joined by two esteemed members of the acclaimed Calder Quartet—violinist Benjamin Jacobson and violist Jonathan Moerschel. \nThe Calder Quartet is internationally renowned for its dynamic artistry\, precision\, and adventurous programming that seamlessly bridges classical masterworks with bold contemporary voices. Praised by The New York Times as “superb” and by the Los Angeles Times as “one of America’s most satisfying ensembles\,” the Calder Quartet has performed at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall\, Lincoln Center\, and Walt Disney Concert Hall\, and has collaborated with composers like Terry Riley\, Andrew Norman\, and Thomas Adès\, as well as artists ranging from Philip Glass to The National. \nCellist John Walz will perform his own edition of the Bach Suite in D Minor\, which he created during the months of Covid. Then John and Altadenan bass player\, Abe Gumroyan will delight with a duet by Rossini. The program concludes with Dvořák’s String Quintet No.2\, where John and Abe are joined by Benjamin Jacobson\, Ana Landauer and Jonathan Moerschel. \nAs ever\, tickets are free\, but reservations are requested.
